| What is Hybrid Structure? |
|
Hybrid structures are metal devices that consists of two or more joined different metals or alloys. This kind of devices is widely used in aircraft and other industries. Regarding magnesium hybrid structures the issue may be defined as completely new. Magnesium inter-alloys and magnesium-aluminum hybrid structures have been introduced in industry only recently. The technical problems that should be solved are joining methods as well as corrosion protection of hybrid structures.
AMTS leads the investigation of magnesium hybrid structures in Israel. Due to our technical possibilities to investigate both problems we already have some positive results.

| Surface treatment of hybrid structures |

Magnesium is very sensitive to galvanic corrosion. It is clear to one skilled in the art that the rate of galvanic corrosion in hybrid structures is increased. It is obviously that treatment of metallic components prior joining may be insufficient because of possible damage during joining procedure. The best solution in this way is to treat joined hybrid structure.
Recently, AMTS STD has finished first stage of investigation of corrosion protection on hybrid structures provided by Israeli Magnesium Users Association. The samples of joined magnesium alloys components (die-casting, sand casting, gravitation casting, magnesium sheet and extrusion) were joined and treated by AMTS-S-0611 and ALGAN 2. Some of the samples were painted after the treatments.
The samples were tested in salt spray test and compared with original (non-joined) magnesium samples and aluminum components coated by standard treatments.
In most cases the test showed significant improvement of corrosion protection and same results with aluminum samples.
The investigation will be continued using other technologies of ours.

Our new technologies such as ALGAN 2M and ALGAN 4 MAC allow to treat in one bath aluminum-magnesium hybrid structures. AMTS-S-0609 has shown excellent performance as a pretreatment prior to powder coating on aluminum-copper hybrid structures.
