Joining Process Development

AMTS usually study four principal joining principals for magnesium couples as well as for hybrid systems (i.e. Mg + Al):

  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG)
  • Resistance Spot Welding (RSW)
  • Adhesive bonding
  • Low power Laser Beam Welding (LBW)

All joining processes are related to specific procedures of surface preparation and surface protection treatment which were developed by AMTS Surface Treatment experts.
One should not separate joining processes from the critic process of surface treatment!

When investigating and optimizing joining processes we deal with:

  • Material adjustment - alloy type, thickness, oxides cleaning.
  • Configurations - butt / fillet / overlap joining
  • Surface treatment - mechanical / chemical cleaning, adhesive bonding substrate, welding primer.
  • Parameters characterization:
    * For TIG - pulse modulation, welding speed, type of filler material, feeding speed of filler, protective gas, heat conduction.
    * For RSW - electrode diameter, function of pressure upon welding schedule, nominal power.
    * For Bonding - types of adhesives.

TIG

Option of Peripheral and longitudinal seam performed by programmed alternate variable polarity with additional reverse current method.
Test types: tensile, X-ray, microstructure and bending tests.

RSW

Apparatus - computerized spot resistance welding up to 400KWA.
Test types: tension helical instrument.
